PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore Matt Mongiardini has been named the Atlantic 10 Baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced today. The right-hander threw a complete-game shutout on Sunday to lead Temple to a 7-0 victory over Saint Louis. Mongiardini was also named the Philadelphia Big 5 Pitcher of the Week.
Mongiardini scattered eight hits and recorded 14 fly-outs on the windy day in Ambler. He did walk five batters, but fought out of any jam that he found himself in. The sophomore stranded two runners each in the first, fourth and seventh, and left the bases loaded in the ninth to improve to 3-5.
It was the first complete-game, nine-inning shutout by a Temple pitcher since Arshwin Asjes beat Saint Joseph's, 2-0, on March 26, 2006. The honor is the first for Mongiardini.
Temple (15-26, 7-11 A-10) takes on Lafayette on Tuesday at 3:30 PM.
