Varsity 8 Wins First Race At George Washington Invitational

WASHINGTON, DC - The Temple men's crew won its first race of three this weekend at the George Washington Invitational on the Potomac River. The Owls Varsity 8 defeated Gonzaga and avenged an early season loss at the Keuper Cup to Florida Tech.
Stroked by walk-on freshman Pat Curran, Temple led from start to finish, and held off a late sprint by Gonzaga for the two-second win. Besides Curran, the Owls' crew included Robert Protesto (7), Dante Cammarata (6), James Harding (5), Peter Gostling (4), Nick Vlahos (3), Thomas Haubrich (2), Don Powers (bow) and Rory Roberts (coxswain).
The Men's Second Varsity 8, comprised of Rory Roberts (coxswain), Sam Cunningham (stroke), Timothy Malloy (7), Brendan Uhll (6), Eric Alexander (5), Bill Gennaro (4), Matt Hanlin (3), Chris Bushek (2), and Joseph Welsh (bow), won its heat by a mere four-tenths of a second over Virginia with Marietta placing third.
The Owls Varsity 4 also defeated Virginia to win its heat while the Freshman 8 fell to the Cavaliers in a two-team race.
Temple faces Cornell and George Washington in next round of action Saturday morning.
