PITTSBURGH, PA - The Temple offense collected 17 hits and broke the single season record for doubles with its 105th of the season, but it went for naught as the Owls fell to Duquesne, 15-6, on Friday afternoon in the series opener. All nine Owl starters had at least one hit, with seven players having two or more, led by junior Stan Orzechowski's three. Senior Dan Brady doubled twice, moving him into a tie for third on the all-time doubles list with 45.
"It's a shame that we can't play a complete game," head coach Rob Valli said. "When you have 17 hits and lose by nine runs, it's almost unbelievable."
Orzechowski and junior Ryan Weber continue their assault on the Temple single season record book. Orzechowski, who doubled in the third inning, now has 17 two-baggers, good for sixth on the single season list. He is also fourth in at-bats (205) and should break the all-time record, held by Jim Tully and Bob Filler, who both had 216 in 2001. Weber, who homered and singled today, has 75 hits this season, which is good for sixth on the single season list.
Temple, which features seven players in double-digits in two baggers, now has 105 doubles on the season, breaking the all-time record of 104 set in 1985.
As for the game, despite out-hitting Duquesne, 17-15, the Owls (17-32, 8-14 A-10) fell for the fifth straight game. The Dukes had two big innings, scoring four in the second and six in the sixth to break the game open.
Brady's first-inning double and sophomore Sean Barksdale's single accounted for TU's first two runs in the first and third, respectively. Weber added a two-run home run in the seventh, his third of the season, to cut the deficit to 11-4. Duquesne (20-25, 8-14 A-10) answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, before the Cherry and White scored a pair of unearned runs in the eighth.
Junior Tom Dolan suffered the loss after allowing nine earned runs in 5.1 innings. He falls to 6-5. Gary Pierpont (3-5) was the victor after surrendering four earned in seven innings.
Aaron Janusey homered and doubled, knocking in five, to pace the Dukes.
The series continues tomorrow at 1 PM.
