Box Score

PITTSBURGH, PA - Duquesne scored in the first five innings and held Temple to five hits, three coming in its last at-bat, in completing the series sweep with a 12-2 win over the Owls on Sunday afternoon. The loss mathematically eliminates the Cherry and White from the Atlantic 10 postseason. Sophomore Jamie Abercrombie had three of Temple's five hits.

Duke (22-25, 10-14 A-10) starter Alex Sharick silenced a Temple offense that scored 17 runs yesterday. He allowed two hits, both off the bat of Abercrombie and left the game after six shutout innings. Sharick improved to 2-6 with the victory.

The hosts chased Temple starter Matt Mongiardini (3-7) after scoring nine runs (seven earned) over the first four innings. DU scored four in the second thanks in part to back-to-back home runs by Derek Mechling and Pat Kimutis. It was Mechling's third round-tripper of the series.

TU scored two runs in the ninth to avoid the shutout. Junior Ryan Weber doubled to lead off the frame and later scored on classmate Mike Kelch's two-out single. Abercrombie then doubled home Kelch to make it 12-2.

Weber's double moved him into sole possession of third place on the single-season hit list with 80. He has the most hits by an Owl in 22 years and needs four to pass George Clark, who had 83 hits in 1985.

Mechling and Bill Torre each had two hits and knocked in two runs for Duquesne.

Temple (17-34, 8-16 A-10) hosts Villanova on Tuesday at 3 PM in the final non-conference contest of the season. The team will honor seniors Dan Brady and Rob Licata in a pre-game ceremony.
