ST. BONAVENTURE, NY - Three Temple pitchers combined to allow a season-low five hits, but the Owls' bats were silent in a 5-1 loss at St. Bonaventure on Thursday at Handler Park. Bonnies sophomore Jim Britton (6-3) went the distance for the win, holding Temple to seven hits while striking out seven. Sophomore Jamie Abercrombie had two hits to lead the Cherry and White.
The final score did not truly represent how close the game was for most of the contest. SBU led 2-1 after scoring two runs in the fifth and didn't add to the lead until the eighth inning.
Temple did not advance a runner past second base after scoring a run in the third on junior Stan Orzechowski's RBI double. It was his 19th of the season, moving him into a tie for second on the single season list. He is one behind Darren O'Neil, who had 20 in 1985.
The Owls (17-36, 8-17 A-10) got two runners on base in the seventh and ninth, both times with two outs, and were unable to push across any runs. Junior Ryan Weber singled in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to nine games, but more importantly, moved into a tie for second place on the single season hit list with 82. He is one short of O'Neil, who had 83 in 1985.
Sophomore John Coyle continued his successful transition from catcher, throwing four innings and allowing two earned runs. He allowed just one hit, but walked four and hit a batter to drop to 1-1.
St. Bonaventure (24-24, 13-11 A-10) scored the go-ahead runs on A-10 Player of the Year candidate Brian Pellegrini, who ripped a two-out, two-run single in the fifth. T.J. Pennino's two-run double in the eighth provided some insurance.
The series resumes on Friday at noon.
