PHILADELPHIA - Temple sophomore Sean Barksdale has been named the Atlantic 10 and Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week, the league office announced today. He batted .550 with 11 RBI in four games last week to earn Temple's first A-10 Player of the Week honor in over three years.
Barksdale had 11 hits in 20 at-bats on his way to driving in 11 runs, including nine on Saturday and Sunday. He finished the season with 59 RBI, good for second in the conference, and the most by a Temple player in 22 years. The Glenolden, PA native ended his first season in Owl Country with a .359 batting average, 13 doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 14 stolen bases.
He opened the week with a 3-for-4 performance, including a two-run triple, against Villanova on Tuesday. After opening the series on Thursday at St. Bonaventure with a 0-for-4 showing, Barksdale went 4-for-5 with four RBI on Friday and 4-for-7 with a home run and five RBI on Saturday.
The Owls have had several Atlantic 10 Pitchers of the Week over the past three years, but have not won a Player of the Week citation since Al Roach on April 5, 2004.
Temple finished its season with an 18-37 record (9-18 Atlantic 10).
