AMBLER, PA - Delaware's Todd Ozog kept Temple off-balance, holding the Owls scoreless until the ninth inning, to lead the Blue Hens to a 6-1 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Skip Wilson Field. TU only advanced one batter past second base until the ninth, when a sophomore Sean Barksdale single plated classmate Carmen Del Mastro, who also singled to start the inning. Junior Ryan Weber had three hits to lead the offense.
Ozog (3-3) scattered seven hits, including five in the last three innings, and struck out four batters. Temple managed just three base runners--two singles by Weber and a walk to junior Mike Kelch until the ninth. Weber's three hits give him 71 for the season, good for eighth on the all-time list and the most since Joe Kerrigan, Jr. had 79 in 1999.
UD (24-18) got on the board with three runs in the fourth on a RBI triple by Alex Buchholz and a two-run homer by Bryan Hagerich. Buchholz, who was a single away from the cycle, also homered in the sixth. Delaware added a pair of runs in the seventh, as well.
The Owls (17-30) threw six pitchers, including four freshmen. Rob Chamra fell to 0-3 after allowing three earned runs in two innings. Freshman starter Matt Blackburn threw two shutout innings, and classmate Ryan Thomas and junior Eric Fritz also had scoreless outings.
"I thought we pitched okay," head coach Rob Valli said. "They're a team that's red-hot right now."
"We got a little more pitching out of our young arms and didn't get as much hitting as we've been accustomed to over the last month," Valli said. "We need to battle back and work for the mid-week split tomorrow at Rider and go from there."
The Hens, who have won 17 of their last 19 games, own a 10-game winning streak, good for their longest in the second half of a season since the 2001 America East champs won 14 in a row. Temple assistant coach Casey Fahy was a junior outfielder on that team. The game also extends the Hens road winning streak to six games.
The meeting was the fourth between the two schools. Each team won two games in the series.
Temple visits Rider (16-25) on Wednesday at 3:30 PM.
