Summer League Update: Obal Named SCBL All-Star

PHILADELPHIA - Temple catcher Kyle Obal has been named to the Southern Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game to highlight several outstanding Owl performances in NCAA sanctioned wooden-bat summer leagues. Obal, who recently completed his sophomore season at Temple, is batting .330 with eight doubles and 15 RBI and has not made an error in 137 chances behind the plate for the Carolina Sox.
Temple has two pitchers in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, rising seniors Tom Dolan and Arshwin Asjes. Dolan is 3-0 with a league-leading 0.31 ERA in four starts for the Holyoke Giants. He has allowed one earned run in 29 innings pitched and has struck out 29 batters. Opponents are batting just .169 against him.
Asjes has appeared in four games, starting two, for the Vermont Mountaineers. He is 0-0 with a 3.65 ERA and has struck out 12 batters in 12.1 innings.
A pair of Temple outfielders, Jamie Abercrombie and Sean Barksdale suited up for the Allegany County Nitros in the New York Collegiate Baseball League. Barksdale batted .260 with two home runs and a team-high 16 RBI in 25 starts for the Nitros. He also stole nine bases and batted .353 with runners in scoring position.
Abercrombie led the team in stolen bases (10) and triples (three). He batted .258 and drove in 15 runs in 25 starts. The Nitros lead the West Divisoin with a 21-10 record.
Two Owls are playing in the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League in Maryland. Mike Kelch, who began the summer with the Wilmington Sharks of the Coastal Plains League, is batting .389 in six games for the College Park Bombers. Rob Chamra has appeared in two games as a relief pitcher for the Bombers.
Two Temple pitchers are playing for the Protocall Starz in the Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League. Kyle Monahan is 0-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 10 appearances while Matt Blackburn has pitched 5.2 innings in two appearances.
Lenny DelGrippo is currently playing for the Fort Collins Foxes in the Mountain Collegiate League. He is batting .273 with three doubles, a home run and 10 RBI.
Richie Gargel has made one appearance for the St. Cloud River Bats of the Northwoods League.
