Volleyball Voted To Finish First In The A-10 East Division

PHILADELPHIA- In the preseason Atlantic 10 head coaches poll the Volleyball team has been voted to finish in first place in the Atlantic 10 East Division. After earning their second-straight Atlantic 10 East Division title last year the Volleyball team looks as though it is in for another remarkable season.
"The A-10 has gotten much more competitive from top to bottom," said head coach Bob Bertucci. "There's no guarantee which team is going to win so your non-conference schedule has to be tough. As a team, we need to be challenged and we have to be better coming into A-10 play."
Even after losing six players the Volleyball team is confident that the returning players can more than get the job done. In the forefront is senior outside hitter, Yue Liu. Twice named First Team All A-10, Liu leads the Owls in kills (441) and digs (384). She is ranked first in the A-10 in points (5.04) and is the first Owl since 2002 to record at least 20 kills and 20 digs in a single A-10 Championship match. Fellow senior Sun Ying Ling will also be an asset to the squad this season. As one of the best liberos in the A-10 she was second on the team in digs (313) and was voted second team all-conference. Last but not least, Senior Christina DeMarco, will be another presence on the court this season. Starting in all 30 matches last season, she was second on the team in blocking (0.95 bpg) and kills (276).
Bertucci welcomes 10 incoming freshman to the 2007 team. "We really tried to compliment the core group with a large incoming class," said Bertucci. "Though it's heavy with freshman, we are confident that this class will not only impact this team, but will also have an effect on the future of the program."
The Cherry and White begins play at home on August 24 against Rider. The team's first conference play is away at George Washington on September 28.
