Volleyball Drops Two Close Matches at Virginia Tournament

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Senior Yue Liu recorded a team-high 31 kills in Temple's final two matches of the 2007 Marriott Jefferson Cup, but it was not enough as the Owls fell to eventual champion Arkansas and host Virginia, 3-2 and 3-1. The Owls fall to 3-5 on the season and next take the floor Friday against New Hampshire at the Maryland Tournament.

Liu tied Arkansas' (5-1) Jessica Dorrell, the tournament MVP, for match-high honors with 19 kills and was instrumental in helping Temple take the first two games of the match by 30-28 and 30-27 scores. The Razorbacks, ranked 33rd in the nation in the latest AVCA poll, stormed back to win the final three games, 30-20, 30-28 and 15-9. Sophomore Yun Yi Zhang added 18 kills for Temple while freshman Cayleigh Ashman (13) and junior Patricia Vernon (12) each topped double figures in kills.

Freshman Caitlyn Loudon had a match-high 58 assists while senior Sun Ying Ling led all players with 18 digs.

The Owls again started strong against Virginia, taking the first game by the score of 30-27. The Cavaliers (4-2) recovered to win the next three games, 30-22, 30-28, 30-27 to win the match. UVa's Sarah Kirkwood had a match-high 24 kills while the Cavaliers Marlow Bruneau led all players with 50 assists. Vernon topped Temple with 14 kills while Liu (12) and Ashman (11) also reached double figures in the category.

Liu was Temple's lone representative on the seven-member all-tournament team.
