Temple Volleyball Snaps Losing Skid With 3-2 Victory Over Utah Valley State

Ann Arbor, Mich.- The offensive tandem of Yue Liu and Yun Yi Zhang each posted double-doubles to lead the Temple volleyball team over Utah Valley State, 3-2, in the final match of the Michigan/Nike Invitational. Liu had 24 kills and 11 digs and Zhang had 20 kills and 16 digs as Temple (4-10) snapped its seven-match losing streak.
The Owls took game one, 30-21, but allowed UV to take a 2-1 lead, dropping games two and three, 30-25 and 30-23, respectively. The Cherry and White used a 71% hitting percentage in game four to win the set, 30-27, and force a game five. Temple dominated in the final game with an 83% hitting percentage to Utah Valley's 33% and won, 15-6.
Defensive specialist Ying Sun Ling had 34 digs to lead the Owls, while Patricia Vernon earned 12 kills. Rookies Ariel Pierre and Caitlin Loudon dished 37 and 11 assists, respectively. Jacqueline Cowden was a force at the net, garnering seven block assists.
Liu was voted to the All-Tournament team, the senior's third straight all-tournament team in as many weekends.
The Owls return to Philadelphia next weekend when they take on Albany and Penn in the Penn Tournament.
