Temple Volleyball Suffers Two Losses In Penn Invitational

PHILADELPHIA- Ariel Pierre, Yue Liu and Yun Yi Zhang all posted double-doubles but it was not enough, as the Temple volleyball team dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Albany in the first match of the University of Penn Invitational. TU competed against host Penn later in the day and fell, 3-1, despite yet another strong performance from Zhang. The Owls fall to 4-12 on the season.

The Cherry and White took game one 30-24 but Albany even the score in game two with a 30-17 result. Temple went ahead, 2-1, with a 30-23 win but were not able to hold on, as UA won games four (30-26) and five (15-5) and the match.

Pierre dished a career and match-high 41 assists to go along with 13 digs, while Zhang had another solid day with 18 kills and 16 digs. Liu contributed 13 kills and 15 digs. Patricia Vernon and Sun Ying Ling also had double-digit tallies, with 11 kills and 14 digs, respectively.

In the game against Penn, Zhang had yet another strong performance with 21 kills and 12 digs, but the Owls fell, 3-1. The Quakers took game one, 30-19, but Temple battled back to tie the match, thanks to a 30-28 result in game two. Penn finished tough, taking the next two games, 30-9 and 30-23, respectively to win the match.

Pierre dished 38 more assists to bring her total to 79 on the day, while Vernon had 15 kills. Liu contributed 11 digs and Ling led the Owls with 21 digs.

Zhang was voted to the All-Tournament Team.

Temple begins Atlantic 10 play next weekend, when they travel to George Washington and Charlotte.
