WASHINGTON, D.C.- Yue Liu and Ariel Pierre fought hard to keep their team afloat, posting double-doubles of 22 kills and 19 digs and 42 assists and 20 digs, respectively but it was not enough, as Temple dropped it Atlantic 10 opener, 3-2, to George Washington on Friday night. The Owl fall to 4-13 on the year, 0-1 in Conference play, while the Colonials improve to 9-8, 2-1 in the A-10.
The Owls got down early, allowing the Colonials to earn 30-23 and 30-24 victories in games one and two. Temple began to fight back in game three, using 50 and 63% hitting percentages in the next two sets (30-28, 31-29) to tie the score at two a piece. The fifth set really could have gone either way, but the Cherry and White came up a little short, losing 15-13.
Yun Yi Zhang and Patricia Vernon were also strong at the net, spiking 23 and 12 kills, respectively. Jackie Morrison dished 13 assists, while Sun Ying Ling had 25 digs. Jacqueline Cowden had a team-high six block assists.
Temple hopes to even the score on Sunday when it travels to Charlotte.
