Owls Impressive At Philadelphia Invitational

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple fencing team went an impressive 4-2 as hosts of the 2008 Philadelphia Invitational on Sunday from the Temple Pavillion.
The Cherry and White defeated Johns Hopkins 26-1, Duke 23-4, Sacred Heart 20-7, and Drew 22-5. The Owls fell to Penn 16-11 and Northwestern 18-9. Both Penn and Northwestern finished the 2007 season ranked in the top 10 of the final rankings.
"We were pleased with how focused the girls were, and how well they worked together to help each other," said coach Nikki Franke.
The team was led by the epee squad, which won five of their six matches on the day. The squad was led by senior captain Marla Nacey, who went a perfect 10-0 for the day. Junior Kaitlyn Uckert also went 11-1 for the epee squad. The epee squad also showed tremendous depth, as all six members posted winning records. The squad additionally earned three 9-0 shutout meets.
The foil squad went 4-2, led by a 9-2 performance from senior Sam Myles. The squad also posted a 9-0 shutout vs. Drew.
The sabre squad went undefeated against Johns Hopkins. Sophomore squad leader Christie Griffith led the squad with a 10-2 record.
The Owls will be in action next weekend when they travel to Atlanta for the NAC Division I/JR Tournament.
