Cross Country Teams Travel to Charlotte for A-10 Championships

CHARLOTTE, NC - The first two of 21 Atlantic 10 team champions will be crowned on Saturday, Nov. 1, with the running of the 2008 Atlantic 10 Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships on Charlotte's Campus Course. The Temple men's cross country team will look to improve upon last season's 11th place finisher, which is tops in program history. The women's cross country team will look to improve upon last season's 13th place finish.
The 31st annual Men's Cross Country Championship will begin at 10:45am on the 8,000-meter course.
Leading the way for the Cherry and White at the championships will be sophomore Mike May and freshman Travis Mahoney. May was the top finisher for the Owls at the Paul Short Invitational, Monmouth Invitational and Princeton Invitational. Mahoney took home first place at the Monmounth XC Kickoff and was honorable as the A-10 Rookie of the Week.Rounding out the rest of the Owls' top runners are sophomore John Hunt and freshmen Eric Conklin and Geoff Barletta.
Last year, the La Salle men claimed their second consecutive title and sixth in the past seven years after placing four runners in the top 15 to turn aside runner-up Richmond, 37-54.
The 20th annual Women's Cross Country Championship will begin at 10:00am. Leading the way for the Cherry and White will be sophomore Rebecca Mims and freshman Karrie Finn.
Mims has been Owls top finisher at the Paul Short Invitational, Monmouth Invitational and Princeton Invitational. Finn was the top finisher at the Mt. Saint Mary's Invitational and Monmouth XC Kickoff.
La Salle seized its fourth consecutive A-10 crown last year with 52 points, while runner-up Richmond amassed 82 points.
The Atlantic 10 Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships are the first two of 21 championships to be held this year - six of which will take place in the fall. The 2008 Women's Soccer Championship (Nov. 6-9) will be held at Robert R. Hermann Stadium at Saint Louis, while Geasey Field, on the campus of Temple University, will be the setting for the Field Hockey Championship (Nov. 7-8). The A-10 Men's Soccer Championship (Nov. 13-16) will be held at Duquesne's Rooney Field, and the Women's Volleyball Championship (Nov. 21-23) will take place at Chaifetz Arena on the campus of Saint Louis University.
