Men's Crew Fares Well At Back-To-Back Regattas

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's crew had a very productive weekend at both the Head of the Schulkill Regatta and the Princeton Chase on October 25 and 26, respectively. The Head of the Schuylkill included top eastern colleges and clubs while the Princeton Chase was limited to collgiate crews only.

On Saturday, at the Head of the Schuylkill, the men's varsity eight "A", comprised of junior stroke Tom Masterson, sophomore John Masterson (7-seat), junior Patrick Curran (6-seat), freshman Jason Cartwright (5-seat), sophomore Jeff Wunderlich (4-seat), junior Brendan Cunningham (3-seat), freshman Stephen Brady (2-seat), sophomore Scott Waters (bow) and junior cox Thomas Goldner, finished fourth out of 15 boats in the Open Heavyweight 8 event.

In that same race, the Cherry and White "B" boat, comprised of freshman stroke Jimmy Barr, senior Joe Welsh (7-seat), sophomore Ryan Rickus (6-seat), freshman Peter Ivacic (5-seat), freshman George Vilimanovic (4-seat), sophomore Steve Cahill (3-seat), junior Scott Herring (2-seat), junior Brad Long (bow) and senior cox Mike Berger finished 13th.

Penn AC, stroked by former Owl rower and Olympic Gold medalist Jason Read, won the race, with Navy placing second and Fordham edging Temple for third.

The Temple frosh/novice group, comprised of stroke Ron DeFelice, Joe Bellesheim (7-seat), Brian Rehill (6-seat), Mike VanAssche (5-seat), Matt Myers (4-seat), John Boehm (3-seat), Chris Roberts (2-seat), Alex Klein (bow) and coxswain Sam Gennace, finished 5th out of 30 boats in the eights event.

Temple's Open four, comprised of Sam Scimeca (cox), Eric Roberts (stroke), Erik Haney (3-seat), Matt Meyers (2-seat) and Nick Contino (bow) finished 13th out of 20 in that event.

On Sunday at the Princeton Chase, the men represented Temple in fine fashion despite being one of the only programs that rowed both Saturday and Sunday.

The varsity eight "A" finished 21st out of 40 crews. The event was won by Yale who bested Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, and Syracuse. Temple's "B" eight, featuring a new alignment that included sophomore stroke Ryan Rickus, sophomore Steve Cahill (7-seat), junior Scott Herring (6-seat), freshman Peter Ivacic (5-seat), freshman George Vilimanovic (4-seat), senior Joe Welsh (3-seat), freshman Matt Meyers (2-seat), sophomore Nick Contino (bow) and senior cox Mike Berger, finished 37th.

The Frosh/Novice Eight, comprised of stroke Ron DeFelice, Joe Bellesheim (7-seat), Brian Rehill (6-seat), Mike VanAssche (5-seat), Jimmy Barr (4-seat), Alex Klein (3-seat), Chris Roberts (2-seat), John Boehm (bow) and coxswain Sam Scimeca finished 10th out of 16 in their race. The Frosh event was also won by Yale who were just ahead of Princeton, Navy, and Penn.

The Owls' Heavyweight Fours finished 26th (Tom Masterson, John Masterson, Pat Curran, Scott Waters and Mike Berger) and 37th (Jeff Wunderlich, Jason Cartwright, Steve Brady, Joe Welsh and Tom Goldner) out of 44 boats.
