PHILADELPHIA - Head coach Nikki Franke and the Temple Women's Fencing team has announced its schedule for the upcoming 2008-2009 season. The schedule will once again be highlighted by the annual Temple Open, which will take place on November 15th and 16th.
"The schedule is once again very challenging, with us playing most of the top ten teams," said Franke, who will be entering her 37th season as head coach of the fencing team. "If you want to compete with the best, you have to play the best."
The 29th annual Temple Fencing Collegiate Open will be held on Saturday and Sunday, November 15 and 16. This is a change from previous seasons, when the Open traditionally took place on the first weekend in November. The Open is known for having the largest competitive field in the United States. Last year, a total of 601 entries from 36 schools, which was the largest field in Open history.
The women's competition will take place on Saturday, November 15th, while the men will take the floor on Sunday, November 16th. More information and sign-up forms for the Temple Open can be found within the Owl Info sidebar.
The Cherry and White open the season on November 1st, when they travel to Happy Valley for the Penn State Open. Following the Temple Open, the Owls will hit the road for two meets in December. The Owls will first participate in the Vassar College Multi-Meet on December 6th, followed by the annual NIWFA Christmas Invitational on December 7th. Following the New Year, the Owls will continue regular season play with trips to Penn, Princeton, Northwestern, and Stevens Tech. Postseason play will begin with the NIWFA Championships from Rutgers University and conclude with the NCAA Regional Championships.
One of the most storied women's fencing programs in NCAA history, the Owls will look to build off last season's 24-6 record behind the return of All-Americans Kristin Howell and Melissa Parker, as well as seven other returning letterwinners.
