CHARLOTTE, NC - The Temple men's cross country team placed 9th for its best ever finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday morning at the Charlotte Campus Course. In just its fourth conference championship appearance since reviving the program in 2005 after a 20-year hiatus, the Owls improved on last season's 11th place finish for the school first ever Top 10 finish.
Also making history for the Owls was sophomore Mike May. He covered the 8k course in a time of 25:01 to place 25th, the highest individual finish at the A-10s and best time in program history.
Freshman stand-out Travis Mahoney placed 40th, covering the hill-and-dale in a time of 25:35.0 and was followed by sophomore John Hunt (77th, 26:33), senior James Waddington (87th, 26:50), and sophomore Erik Conklin (91st, 26:54).
Temple finished 13th in both the 2005 and 2006 conference races. Prior to 2005, the program had been dormant since last running in 1985.
Massachusetts took home the team title with 75 points. Charlotte's Adu Dentamo stole the show by turning in a time of 24:01, which is the fastest A-10 championship time in 23 years and the third fastest time in conference history.
Duquesne finished in the runner-up spot in the men's race, a mere one point behind Massachusetts by turning in a 76 point performance. Senior Derek Dutille led the charge for the Dukes with a sixth place finish. Richmond came across the line in third place with 111 points and was led by junior Matt Llano who was the individual runner-up.
Charlotte took fourth place with 115 point while La Salle rounded out the top five with 122 points. Rounding the rest of the top ten were Dayton, Saint Joseph's, Xavier and then the Cherry and White.
Rounding out the rest of the field were Fordham, George Washington, Saint Louis, Rhode Island and Saint Bonaventure.
Temple returns to action in two weeks at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals.
