Men's Crew Wins Three Gold Medals At Murphy Cup Regatta

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's crew team dominated the Schuylkill River at the 26th Annual Murphy Cup Saturday. The Owls' Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8 and Novice 4 all were victorious. On the women's side, the Cherry and White placed third in the Varsity 8 Petite Final and third in the Lightweight 8.
The Men's Varsity 8 defended its Murphy Cup title by defeating Fordham by three seconds. Sophomore Tom Masterson stroked the Owls' shell that was comprised of senior Robert Protesto, (7-seat), senior Thomas Haubrich (6-seat), senior Don Powers (5-seat), sophomore Justin Allphin (4-seat), senior Nicholas Vlahos (3-seat), sophomore Patrick Curran (2-seat), sophomore Patrick Welsh (bow) and junior coxswain Thomas Goldner.
The Owls' Second Varsity 8 also repeated as champions, besting Delaware by two-and-a-half seconds to captured its gold medal. Stroked by senior Sam Cunningham, the shell was comprised of senior Chris Schwartz (7-seat), senior Bill Gennaro (6-seat), sophomore Brendad Cunningham (5-seat), sophomore Scott Herring (4-seat), junior Joseph Welsh (3-seat), sophomore Mike Whitman (2-seat), freshman John Masterson (bow) and senior cox Rory Roberts.
The Gold Medal winning Novice 4 boat, that easily downed second place Delaware, was comprised of Ryan Rickus (stroke), Scott Waters (3-seat), Jeff Wunderlich (2-seat), Nick Contino (bow) and Don Norris (cox).
The Owls are off until April 12 when they travel to the Cooper River to take part in the Knecht Cup.
