Men's Varsity 8 Successfully Defends Knecht Cup Title

COLLINGSWOOD, NJ - For the second straight regatta the Temple Men's varsity 8 successfully defended a title. This time, the Owls came from fourth of the line for a come-from-behind win at the Knecht Cup Sunday afternoon on the Cooper River. The men's second varsity 8 also won gold while the freshman/novice 4 took home a silver medal.
The Varsity 8, comprised of sophomore Tom Masterson stroked the Owls' shell that was comprised of senior Robert Protesto, (7-seat), senior Thomas Haubrich (6-seat), senior Don Powers (5-seat), sophomore Justin Allphin (4-seat), senior Nicholas Vlahos (3-seat), sophomore Patrick Curran (2-seat), senior Chris Schwartz (bow) and senior coxswain Rory Roberts, moved into first place 400 meters into the race and the extended their lead to open water at the 900 meter mark. The Owls held off numerous runs over the last 500 meters to hold on for victory in a fast time of 5:49.1
The Second Varsity 8, comprised of senior Sam Cunningham (stroke), sophomore Patrick Welsh (7-seat), senior Bill Gennaro (6-seat), sophomore Brendan Cunningham (5-seat), sophomore Scott Herring (4-seat), junior Joseph Welsh (3-seat), sophomore Mike Whitman (2-seat), sophomore Bradford Long (bow) and junior cox Thomas Goldner, led from start to finish, defeating second place Colgate by a length and a half.
The Owls' Freshman/Novice 4 fell to Colgate by a length in a tightly-contested race. The shell was comprised of coxswain Mark Brockbank, Ryan Rickus (stroke), John Masterson (3-seat), Jeff Wunderlich (2-seat) and Scott Waters (bow).
Temple next travels to the Southern Intercollegiate Regatta Association Regatta in Oak Ridge, TN next Saturday. Many of the top ranked teams expected to contend at next months Dad Vail Regatta are scheduled to compete in Oak Ridge.
