PHILADELPHIA - Senior Mike Mongiardini, who did not allow an earned run in 5.1 innings of three-hit baseball on Sunday against Richmond, was named the Philadelphia Big 5 Pitcher of the Week, in voting conducted by the schools' head coaches and sports information offices. The southpaw struck out three batters and walked just one to improve to 2-2.
Mongiardini, a senior transfer from Yale, helped the Owls to their first series victory over Richmond since the Spiders joined the conference in 2002. He settled down after escaping a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and did not allow another hit until the fifth. He retired nine straight batters at one point.
La Salle's Mike Dertouzos was named the Big 5 Player of the Week after batting .583 with four RBI in three games for the Explorers.
Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball is comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball. The Big 5 will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Tuesday during the season. The third annual All-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
Temple hosts Delaware (11-22) on Tuesday at Skip Wilson Field. First pitch is set for 3 PM.
