PHILADELPHIA - Temple University honored its best in athletics, both on and off the field, at its sixth annual Breakfast of Champions Wednesday morning. In all, over 200 Temple student-athletes were recognized for academic and athletic accomplishments with junior Paul Amess being named the top male Student-Athlete of the Year and sophomore fencer Kristin Howell earning the top female Student-Athlete of the Year award.

"The Breakfast of Champions is the perfect way to celebrate, as a community, what is special about athletics at Temple University," said Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw, who instituted the event in 2003, his first full year at the school. "We annually recognize the `best of the best' at Temple, and Paul and Kristin are fine examples of what is good about intercollegiate athletics."

Amess, a big hitting lefthander, owns the team's lowest stroke average (73.9 spg.) and is currently ranked in the top 10 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Stevenage, England native was just one stroke away from winning the Princeton Invitational and shot the sixth-lowest individual score in program history with a 67 earlier this season. He also won the Bermuda Match Play Championship earlier this spring and is now exempt to the final round of British Open qualifying. The team captain owns a 3.9 grade point average as a finance major and was named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team for golf in 2007.

A member of the Temple University's epee squad, Howell finished her sophomore season with a 27-10 record. In postseason action, this San Antonio, TX native finished ninth in the NCAA Championships and was named honorable mention All-American, making her the first epee All-American in Temple history. In addition, she also finished second while competing in the Women's `Under 20'-epee event at the US Fencing Junior Olympics to cap of an impressive 2008 campaign. With the help of this outstanding student-athlete, the Temple fencing team finished the season 24-6 and ranked #8 in the nation. She also excells in the classroom, earning a 3.06 cumulative grade point average as an undeclared University Studies major.

Besides Amess and Howell, 101 student-athletes were named to the Director's Honor Roll (3.0-3.49 cumulative grade point averages) with the addition of 40 student-athletes to the President's Honor Roll (3.50 or above). Temple also singled out its top student-athletes in terms of grade point average - Amess, Candice Borrows (women's basketball), Mathieu Chevrollier (men's soccer), Noelle McKenzie (women's cross country/track), Krystle Metzler (softball), Anne Marie Mikolajewski (women's crew), Jacklyn Morrison (volleyball), J.T. Noone (men's soccer), Anastasiia Rukavyshnykova (women's tennis) and Charise Young (field hockey) - for its Trustee Ten.

The field hockey team won the Top Team GPA Award with an aggregate grade point average of 3.249. In addition to having the Top GPA on Campus, the field hockey team received the 2007 Division I National Academic Team Award and had 11 members named to the National Academic Squad by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).

Athletically, senior Alli Lokey of the field hockey team and Kristin Howell and Melissa Parker of the fencing team were honored for earning All-America status during the 2007-08 season.

The men's and women's basketball, men's gymnastics team, women's tennis team as well as four women's fencers - Christie Griffith, Kristin Howell, Melissa Parker and Grace Wu- were also recognized for participating in the NCAA Tournament.

Junior football player Alex Derenthal was honored for his selection as a representative to the 2008 NCAA National Student-Athlete Development Conference.

Junior Reava Potter (women's track) and senior Stan Orzechowski (baseball) were named as the recipients of the Enterprise Spirit and Sportsmanship Award, given annually to student-athletes who have demonstrated a devotion to the essence of sport through their acts of sportsmanship.

Sophomore Josue Louis (men's track) and junior Jillian Ploof (women's crew) were named the male and female recipients of the Temple Teammates Award, given to student-athletes who have demonstrated leadership qualities in the area of community service, inspiring others to engage in similar selfless civic endeavors for the purpose of improving the quality of life for those in the local community.

Comcast SportsNet's Neil Hartman, who has been involved with Philadelphia athletics as a television sports anchor for over two decades, served as the emcee for this year's Breakfast of Champions while Bill Mills, President of PNC Bank, was the presenting sponsor.
