Matt Mongiardini Named Owlsports.com Athlete Of The Month For March

PHILADELPHIA - Junior pitcher Matt Mongiardini, who went 4-1 with a 1.53 ERA in five starts, has been named the Owlsports.com Athlete of the Month for March. He helped lead the Owls to a 12-6 record during March, its best month since going 13-6 in March, 2004. Opponents batted just .236 against the right-hander in 29.1 innings pitched.
The Toms River, NJ native began the month by defeating preseason #25 Old Dominion by throwing seven scoreless innings. He scattered three hits and struck out four in the 5-2 win in Norfolk, VA.
He picked up a rare mid-week start on March 11 at Maryland-Eastern Shore and recorded the win by throwing five innings without allowing an earned run. Four days later hs beat Long Island with five innings and one earned run.
Mongiardin improved to 4-0 at Rhode Island, despite allowing four earned runs in six innings. He suffered his first loss on Saturday at Saint Joseph's, even though he did not allow an earned run in 6.1 innings.
He is 4-1 with a 2.04 overall and has 19 strikeouts in 35.1 innings.
