PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Steve Nikorak has been named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher and Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. The Stroudsburg, PA native won two games with a 1.17 ERA and is the third Atlantic 10 player to earn both awards in the same week this season. He was also named the Philadelphia Big 5 Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday.
Nikorak tossed six shutout innings and fanned a career-high five on Saturday as Temple blanked Saint Louis, 5-0. The right-hander took a no-hitter into the fifth and yielded just two singles on the afternoon.
He struck out three in 1.2 innings out of the bullpen to earn the win on May 13 in the Owls' 14-8 win over Villanova. The freshman is now 3-3 with a 4.58 ERA this season.
La Salle's Kevin Fuqua (March 10) and Rhode Island's Chris Pickering (March 31) were the other two A-10 players to pick up both Pitcher and Rookie of the Week citations this season.
Temple (26-27, 16-11 A-10) returns to the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time since 2002 when it takes on Rhode Island on Wednesday at noon at Campbell's Field in Camden, NJ.
