Men's Varsity 8 Upsets #15 Georgetown

WASHINGTON, DC - The Temple men's varsity 8 posted its best win of the season, defeating 15th-ranked Georgetown Sunday morning on the Potomac River. The Owls will look to use the momentum gained by the victory next weekend when the team competes at the Dad Vail Regatta.
Georgetown opened up a slight lead at the 250-meter mark, but the unranked Owls made an early move and took the lead with 1500 meter to go. Temple drew steadily away at 37 strokes per minute to an open water lead with 1000 meters to go. They held off a late surge by the Hoyas to win by a half length. Temple finished the 2000-meter course in 5:20.6 while Georgetown's time was 5:22.9.
The Varsity 8 was comprised of sophomore stroke Tom Masterson, senior Robert Protesto, (7-seat), senior Thomas Haubrich (6-seat), senior Don Powers (5-seat),sophomore Patrick Curran (4-seat),, senior Nicholas Vlahos (3-seat), senior Sam Cunningham (2-seat), senior Chris Schwartz (bow) and senior coxswain Rory Roberts.
The men's second varsity 8, comprised of senior stroke Bill Gennaro, sophomore Patrick Welsh (7-seat), senior Bill Gennaro (6-seat), sophomore Scott Herring (6-seat), sophomore Brendan Cunningham (5-seat), sophomore Justin Allphin (4-seat), junior Joseph Welsh (3-seat), sophomore Mike Whitman (2-seat), sophomore Bradford Long (bow) and junior cox Thomas Goldner lost a tight race to Georgetown. The Hoyas led from about the 20th stroke all the way to the finish. Georgetown was timed in 5:35.1 to Temple's 5:40.5.
The Temple men's first frosh/novice 4, comprised of coxswain Don Norris, Scott Water (stroke), John Masterson (3-seat), Jeff Wunderlich (2-seat) and Steve Cahill (bow) defeated Georgetown in a time of 6:07.8 to 6:08.1. Temple men's second frosh/novice 4, comprised of coxswain Mark Brockbank, Ryan Rickus (stroke), Parsa Sharifi (3-seat), Steve Jankiewic (2-seat) and Nick Contino (bow) lost to Georgetown 6:19.2 to 6:29.9.
The Owls next take the water on Friday at the Dad Vail Regatta.
