Amess Wins Hertfordshire County Championship

KNEBWORTH, ENGLAND - Temple senior Paul Amess won the Hertfordshire County Championship at Knebworth Golf Club in suburban London on Sunday by defeating Chris Tingey, 5&4. The championship, comparable to a state championship in the United States, qualifies Amess for the Champion of Champions Tournament hosted by the English Golf Union in September.
Playing his home course, Amess shot a 72-73=145 (+3) in the 66-player field on Friday to qualify for one of 16 spots to advance in match-play. Seeded tenth, Amess defeated #7 John Ambridge, 4&2, and #2 Ryan Newman, 1-up, on Saturday to advance to the semifinals.
On Sunday, the Stevenage, England native beat #6 Laurence Allen, 5&4, before taking down #1 Chris Tingey, 5&4, in the finals. He did not trail throughout the four matches.
"Being hosted at my home club in its centenary year, the match attracted a good crowd, probably the biggest I have ever played in front of," Amess said.
"Paul is really playing some good golf," Temple head coach Brian Quinn said. "He has a bright future in this game."
Golf Hall of Famer Nick Faldo, a winner of six majors, won the Hertfordshire County Championship in 1975.
The CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic Second Team All-American has had plenty of success in international competition this year. He won the Bermuda Match Play Championship in March, which exempts him to the final round of British Open qualifying later this summer.
The Stevenage, England native led the Temple golf team with a 73.9 stroke average this season and was the Owls top finisher (14th) at the Atlantic 10 Championship (74-71-72=217, +1). A two-time A-10 Golfer of the Week, Amess was one stroke away from winning his first collegiate tournament at the Princeton Invitational earlier this year with a 71-73-68=212 (-1).
