Four Owls Named To Summer League All-Star Teams

PHILADELPHIA - Four Temple baseball players-- rising seniors Lenny DelGrippo, Carmen Del Mastro and Kyle Obal, and rising sophomore Byron McKoy - have been named to their respective summer league all-star teams. Del Grippo and Del Mastro are teammates on the Fort Collins Foxes of the Mountain Collegiate League, Obal suits up for the Rockville Express of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League while McKoy plays for the Carolina Thunder in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League.
"Being selected for the all star team is a reflection of all the hard work and dedication so many of our players give to the game, " Temple head coach Rob Valli said. "We're proud of the way they have represented Temple Baseball across the country."
Del Grippo is batting .367 with five doubles, two home runs and 26 RBI for Fort Collins, who is a game out of first place in the MCBL with a 23-14 record. The Collegeville, PA native is splitting time at first base and in the outfield during his second stint with the Foxes.
Del Mastro leads the team in runs (43), hits (49) and stolen bases (18) and is batting .415 with a pair of triples. The Philadelphia product has seen most of his innings at second base.
Obal will be starting for the East squad in the Ripken League All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 22. The All-Philadelphia Big 5 selection is batting .228 with a double and nine RBI for the Express.
McKoy started in centerfield and batted third in the SCBL All-Star game. The Charlotte, NC native is batting a team-high .397 with three doubles, two triples and a pair of home runs. The Thunder is currently in fifth-place in the SCBL with a 16-17 record. He is the second straight Owl to receive SCBL All-Star honors as Obal received the honor in 2007.
Several other Owls are having successful summers on the diamond. Rising senior Matt Mongiardini is 3-0 with a 2.79 ERA in 19.1 innings for the Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plains League. Rising junior Ryan Thomas is 4-0 with a 1.67 ERA in 33 innings for the Washington Blue Sox of the Tri-State Collegiate League. Rising sophomore Ben White is 1-3 but has a 3.69 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 31.2 innings for the Maryland Redbirds of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League.
