No. 8 Women's Fencing Finishes 4-2 at Princeton Multi-Meet

PRINCETON, N.J. - Facing half of nation's top 10 teams, the No. 8 Temple women's fencing finished with a 4-2 record from the Princeton Multi-Meet on Sunday.

The Owls defeated Haverford college (19-8), Cornell (17-10) No. 7 Princeton (16-11) and No. 10 Duke (14-13), but fell to No. 1 Penn State (21-6 ) and No. 9 Penn (17-10).

Sabre led the team for most of the day, highlighted by sophomore Audrey Barroso 10-6 performance. Sophomore Samanatha Pascarelli, slowed by illness, posted a 4-0 result in limited action. Senior squad leader Kristine Jones went 6-3. Junior Christie Griffith ended the day at 4-6. Freshman Kamali Thompson posted an 8-7 result on the day.

Epee was led by a 8-6 performance from sophomore Grace Wu and a 7-5 result from junior Kristin Howell. Sophomore Alyssa Lombardi posted a 5-6 result, including big wins against 2008 All-Americans Keri Byerts (PSU) and Jasjit Bhinder (Princeton). Freshman Jillian Bratton ended up at 4-5. Senior Team Captain Kaitlyn Uckert finished at 3-5.

Junior Melissa Parker led the way for foil with a 9-5 effort. Freshman Cara Taggersell went 4-9, but posted amuch-needed 3-0 sweep of Princeton. Senior squad leader Sabrina Shapiro went 4-8 for the day. Freshman Nicola Horscroft ended up at 2-4 as fellow freshman Danielle Joneswent 0-4. Sophomore Beccy Lehrman went 1-1 in illness-limited action.

As a team, the Owls (9-3) opened the day with a 19-8 victory over Haverford College. Sabre set the tone with a 9-0 shutout as epee and foil edged the Fords by identical 5-4 tallies.

The second round saw a match-up against No. 1 ranked Penn State. The Nittany Lions proved deserving of that rankingas the Owls fell 6-21. Sabre was outscored 3-6, epee 2-7, and foil was defeated 1-8.

The third round featured cross-town rivals No. 9 Penn Quakers. Epee claimed a 5-4 win, but it was not enough as foil and sabre each fell 2-7 for a combined score of 9-18.

The Cherry and White regrouped to defeat the host Tigers. The Owls repeated the 16-11 score from the same meet held in early December. All three squads were vitorious, with epee and sabre edging the Tigers 5-4 and sabre posting a 6-3 result.

Another rematch occurred in the fifth round as Temple faced off against #10 Duke for the second time in 15 days. In a match that went down to the final bouts, Temple edged out the Blue Devils 14-13.

The day concluded with a meet against Cornell. Sabre again set the tone with a solid 9-0 performance. Foil and epee were each narrowly defeated 4-5 as the meet concluded at 17-10.


The Temple Owls return to action this weekend with a trip to the Midwest and the Northwestern Multi-Meet, where the Owls will face off against top rankaed Notre Dame, #3 Ohio State, and #6 Northwestern.
