Women's Basketball Travels To #6 Duke Monday Looking For Fourth Straight Win

Raleigh, N.C.- The Temple women's basketball team (8-4) travels to North Carolina on Monday night to take on the 6th-ranked Duke Blue Devils (11-1).The Owls, who have won three straight games, are 0-3 all-time against the Blue Devils. Duke won the last meeting, 64-53, on November 23, 2008.
Against Ranked Teams
Temple is 11-81 all-time against ranked teams and 1-42 against those ranked in the Top 10. The last time that the Owls knocked off a Top 10 opponent was during the 2005-06 season when they topped #9 Rutgers (1/19), 48-47.
Homecoming
Sophomores Marli Bennett and Shaqwedia Wallace should both have a strong cheering section in the stands tonight, as both are North Carolina natives. Bennett hails from Pilot Mountain, while Wallace calls Wilmington her home. The duo played with and against each other in the North Carolina/South Carolina All-Star game and in the NC East-West All Star game in 2007.
Scouting the Owls
Shenita Landry netted 19 points to lead five players in double figures in Temple's 81-70 victory over Big Five opponent Penn on Friday night. The Owls trailed for most of the contest, until a strong second half push by junior Ranecia Fields allowed the visitors to extend their lead to as many as 12 points. Fields had a career-high 18 points, including the 10 of TU's final 13 points of the game. Shaqwedia Wallace finished with 16 points, 10 of which came in the first half, while BJ Williams and Shanea Cotton contributed 10 points apiece. Landry grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and Williams, Fields each dished three assists. Freshman Kristen McCarthy had a strong performance of seven points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Cotton leads four Owls in double figures with 13 ppg, while Landry is second with 12.9 ppg and a team-high 9.2 rpg. Wallace is third with 11.9 ppg and LaKeisha Eaddy is fourth with 10.5 ppg and a squad-high 51 assists.
Scouting the Blue Devils
Chante Black and the Duke Blue Devils proved to be too much for Providence on Wednesday night, topping the Friars, 66-49. Black scored 12 of her 17 points in the second half and Abby Waner added 13 as No. 6 Duke won its ninth straight game. Jasmine Thomas and Karima Christmas scored nine points apiece for the Blue Devils, who turned back a second-half surge from unranked Providence that cut the lead to one point. Duke took a 32-24 lead into the half, but Providence closed to 42-41 on a 3-pointer. That was the closest the Friars got as the Blue Devils used a 24-8 run to pull away down the stretch.
Black leads two players in double figures with 16.3 ppg and a team-high 8.0 rpg. Waner is averaging 10.3 ppg and has dished a team-high 43 assists.
