PHILADELPHIA - The 2009-10 Temple men's varsity rowing program officially began its fall season with the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River on Saturday, October 10. The veteran Owl team, which returns 15 of its top 16 rowers from a year ago, had a much better opening performance than last year.
The Varsity 8, comprised of James Barr (stroke), Scott Waters (7-seat), Jason Cartwright (6-seat), Nenad Ninkovic (5-seat), Patrick Curran (4-seat), Brendan Cunningham (3-seat), Thomas Masterson (2-seat), John Mastersons (bow) and Don Norris (coxswain), finished fourth in the Men's Championship Eight with a time of 12:32.4 - behind Navy (12:12.0), Penn AC (12:17.8), and Drexel (12:31.1). The Owls finished ahead of Penn (12:36.0), Army (12;40.2), Saint Joseph's (12:40.3), Delaware (12:41.3) and Rutgers (12:49.0) in a field of 22.
The JV8, comprised of Stephen Brady (stroke), Joe Belleshiem (7-seat), Jeff Wunderlich (6-seat), Petar Ivacic (5-seat), Brian Rehill (4-seat), Mike VanAssche (3-seat), Scott Herring (2-seat), Brad Long (bow) and Samuel Scimeca (coxswain), finished third with a time of 13:10.7 - behind Navy (12:55.6) and Drexel (13:09.2). The Owls second eight finished ahead of Rutgers, Army, Lehigh, and Delaware.
The Collegiate 4+ finished in 10th place, a really strong showing given that the boat was manned by mostly newcomers.
The Owls next compete at the Head of the Schuylkill on October 24.
