Owls' squad collects for UNICEF; participates in Coaches vs. Cancer Clinic

PHILADELPHIA - Their first official practice of the 2009-10 season was Friday, Oct. 16, but along with spending much of the weekend on the court, the Temple women's basketball team bonded off the court by serving the community at two different events.

During the Temple football game against Army at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday, the team collected donations for UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund.

"We'd like to thank the Temple community for helping us support UNICEF," said Jim Gillespie, Director of Operations for the team. The project is ongoing for Temple Athletics, with a number of teams working to raise money for the organization.

On Sunday, Oct. 18, the team participated in the Big 5 Coaches vs. Cancer Clinic, where players and coaches from all the Big 5 schools along with Drexel, came together at the newly-dedicated Michael Hagan Arena on the campus of Saint Joseph's. The clinic was run for girls from first through eighth grades, as well as AAU, grade school and high school coaches.

All proceeds benefited Coaches vs. Cancer, a joint effort between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that empowers basketball coaches, their teams, and communities to help win the fight against cancer.

The Owls, coming off a 21-10 season that saw them earn a sixth-straight NCAA Tournament berth, will open their season at home on Friday, Nov. 13 against Illinois.
