Mongiardini earns two wins, White and Visnic pick up victories
Ambler, PA – Team Cherry came ready to play in Temple baseball's annual Cherry & White Fall Classic, held October 23rd at Skip Wilson Field. Cherry pitcher Matt Mongiardini earned a pair of wins as the starter of the first two games leading his squad to an eventual series sweep.
The Cherry pitching staff was dominant, not permitting a runner to reach second base or cross home plate. Mongiardini threw a combined four innings; striking out five while only allowing two hits. Junior Ben White was perfect in game three of the series, fanning five White batters not surrendering a hit or walk. Getting the nod in game four was sophomore Steve Visnic, who struck out three friendly-foes over two innings.
“The team as a whole played outstanding,” commented Cherry skipper senior Ryan Thomas. “I could not have asked for a better performance from our pitchers or our lineup. They came prepared to play and showed it on the field.”
Thomas' squad benefited from consistency at the dish. Newcomers Jean Carlos Diaz and Adrian Perez each had three hits over the four games, while senior Ryan Ferguson knocked two hits driving in three runs. Perez singled in a run in the series opener.
Sophomore Foster Dunigan and junior Ben Flanary each doubled in game one, the only extra base hits of the series. Dunigan also tallied a hit in the series finale.
