Owls face 2009 SEC champs looking to ride momentum of OT win vs. Illinois

PHILADELPHIA - After a thrilling, come-from-behind overtime win against Illinois in its home opener on Nov. 13, Temple returns to the court against Auburn on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 7:00 p.m. in McGonigle Hall.
QUICK HITS
-The Cherry and White have three starters back from a team that finished 21-10 last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament First Round; the Owls' sixth straight appearance in the tournament.
-Senior LaKeisha Eaddy is TU's top returner, averaging 11.4 ppg and 5.5 apg last season.
-Eaddy, an Atlantic 10 Second Team selection last year, was named to the Preseason All-A-10 second team, while sophomore teammate Kristen McCarthy garnered preseason third team honors.
-Juniors Shaqwedia Wallace and Marli Bennett joined Eaddy and McCarthy as part of the starting lineup in game one, while freshman Natasha Thames got a start at center in her first career game.
-Temple is making a return to McGonigle Hall for seven of its 14 home games this season. The Owls used McGonigle Hall as their primary facility from 1974-1997, and prior to last Friday had played only once there since, against Xavier in 2007 which TU won, 59-58.
SCOUTING AUBURN
Auburn was ranked 13th at the end of last year after finishing with a record of 30-4 overall and leading the SEC with a record of 12-2. The Tigers are no longer ranked after losing All-American DeWanna Bonner as well as their second and third-leading scorers, and were picked to finish eighth in the SEC this season.
The lone starter returning for the Tigers is Preseason All-SEC second team pick, junior guard Alli Smalley, who ranked fourth on the team with 11.1 points per game, and third in assists with 71. Head Coach Nell Fortner is in her seventh season and has led the Tigers to two straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
Auburn faced Troy at home in its home opener last Friday, coming away with a 70-65 win. Smalley led all players and tied her career-high with 23 points.
HONORS FOR QWEDIA
The first Big 5 Player of the Week honor for the season went to Shaqwedia Wallace, for her outstanding play in the Owls' overtime win vs. Illinois on Nov. 13. Wallace was also named OwlSports.com's Athlete of the Week. Kristen McCarthy was one of three Big 5 players named to the weekly Big 5 Honor Roll.
Wallace scored 17 points in the second half on her way to a career-high 27, including 4-for-9 from beyond the arc. She also had five rebounds and tied a team-high four steals, as she rallied the Owls from an 18-point deficit. McCarthy tied a career-high 19 points and added three assists, four steals, and one block in the win. She went 8-for-11 from the free throw line, including a clutch 3-for-3 performance with 16 seconds remaining to force overtime with the score tied at 75.
EIGHT IN A ROW
Temple is now 20-12 in season openers since the 1979-80 season, and has won eight straight dating back to 2002.
NEVER SAY DIE
After trailing by as many as 18 points, and sitll trailing by 16 with under six minutes remaining, the Owls pulled off an impressive comeback in their season opener vs. Illinois, forcing overtime and then winning the game, 82-78.
COMING THROUGH IN THE CLUTCH
Kristen McCarthy was 5-for-8 from the free throw line before getting fouled on a 3-point shot with 16 seconds remaining vs. Illinois. She came through when it counted, sinking all three to tie the game at 75-75 and ultimately send the contest into overtime.
SHOOTERS KEEP SHOOTING
The heart of Temple's comeback vs. Illinois belonged to LaKeisha Eaddy, who had struggled from the field all night, going 0-for-10 until the final minutes of regulation. Eaddy drove to the basket for a layup and then converted the three-point play after getting fouled. On Temple's next possession, she sank a trey to bring the Owls within five points of the Fighting Illini.
CARDOZA 2-FOR-2 IN OT
Temple has gone to overtime twice since Tonya Cardoza took over the program last seaosn, and the Owls have won both times. Last year Temple earned a 75-71 OT win at Tulane, and last week the Owls won 82-78 in OT vs. Illinois.
MAKES A GREAT DISH
LaKeisha Eaddy will soon become the second all-time leader in career assists at Temple, as she currently stands in fourth with 385 assists, and needs only 14 to take over second place. Eaddy began with a bang in TU's season opener, dishing out a game-high 10 assists in the overtime win.
NATIONAL EXPOSURE
Two games on Temple schedule will be broadcast on national television. The Owls will play host to Villanova in a Big 5 matchup on Sunday, Dec. 20, in a contest that will air live on CBS College Sports.
When Temple travels to defending A-10 regular season champ Xavier, the game will be televised on ESPN2. That contest is set for Sunday, Jan. 10 at 3:00 p.m.
TAKING IT AWAY
Senior LaKeisha Eaddy ranked 21st in the nation with 2.8 steals per game last season, and is currently ninth on the all-time career steals list at Temple with 183. She needs only five to take over the eighth spot.
GET ON THE BUS
Next up for Temple is a two-game road swing to the north, as the Owls will take a bus for nearly 2,000 miles round trip to play at Dartmouth and Buffalo.
