BUFFALO, N.Y. – Three-point shooting in the second half carried the Temple women's basketball team to a 65-55 win at Buffalo on Saturday afternoon, improving the Owls to 4-0 for the season. Shaqwedia Wallace hit 4-of-10 from beyond the arc en route to a team-high 22 points.
Kristen McCarthy and LaKeisha Eaddy also scored in double figures with 10 points apiece. McCarthy notched her first double-double of the season, grabbing a game and career-high 11 rebounds.
The Owls struggled out of the gate, going 0-10 from the field in the opening five minutes and getting in a 6-0 hole. McCarthy got Temple on the board at the 14-minute mark, and from there the Owls got things going to tie the score at 8-8.
BJ Williams hit back-to-back three-pointers and Eaddy drained a jump shot to give Temple a 24-18 lead with 5:16 remaining, a lead the Owls would not relinquish, taking a 29-24 lead into halftime.
Wallace hit four treys over a five-minute span in the second half, taking the Owls from a 35-30 lead to a 47-34 lead at the midway point of the half.
The Bulls rallied to keep the game within reach, coming as close as five points on two occasions, but two treys from Eaddy helped hold them off and Temple went 8-8 from the free throw line in the final minute to seal the win.
“Shaqwedia really opened it up for us,” said head coach Tonya Cardoza. “She was our spark off the bench last year, and this year being part of the starting lineup, we really need her to score more. She only took five shots at Dartmouth (two days ago) and I told her 'sometimes you have to search for it,' and today she made sure she got shots. They didn't fall early, but she stuck with it.”
“Buffalo is a really tough team,” said Cardoza. “They played extremely hard, and remind me of some teams in our conference. Hopefully these non-conference games will continue to prepare us for what we'll face in the A-10.”
Temple will return to the court on Tuesday, Nov. 24 in a 5:00 p.m. contest vs. Eastern Michigan. The game is part of a doubleheader in the Liacouras Center with the men's basketball team, who will play Ball State at 7:30 p.m.
