Women's Basketball Set to Face Fellow Undefeated Team Eastern Michigan on Tuesday

Owls will play at 5:00 p.m. in the Liacouras Center as part of a doubleheader with the men's team

PHILADELPHIA - Off to the best start since 2005, the Owls are undefeated at 4-0 and will take on another 4-0 team when they face Eastern Michigan at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14. The game will be Temple's first of the season at the Liacouras Center, and will be followed by the Owls' men's basketball game against Ball State at 7:30 p.m.
Temple's first win of the season, a thrilling, come-from-behind overtime win against Illinois in its home opener, set the tone so far as the Owls then earned a 66-52 victory over 2009 SEC champ Auburn followed by a 64-38 win at 2009 Ivy League champ Dartmouth. Most recently, Temple defeated Buffalo on the road, 65-55.
Junior Shaqwedia Wallace is leading the Owls so far with 18.0 points per game, while senior Jasmine Stone leads the team in rebounds at 7.8 per game. Stone came off the bench for a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds in leading TU to the win at Dartmouth.
Senior LaKeisha Eaddy (7.5 ppg, 5.5 apg) returns as a preseason A-10 Second Team selection, while sophomore Kristen McCarthy, a preseason third team pick, is the second-leading scorer to Wallace with 12.3 points per game. Also in the starting lineup is junior Marli Bennett (5.8 ppg, 4.5 rpg) and freshman Natasha Thames (5.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg).
SCOUTING EASTERN MICHIGAN
With wins over Illinois-Chicago, Marygrove, Siena and most recently Niagara, Eastern Michigan is 4-0 and halfway to its win total from 2008-09 when the Eagles finished 8-21. They return four starters from that team, and are so far being led by sophomore guard Tavelyn James with 18.8 ppg. Junior Sydney Huntley also averages in double figures at 12.8 ppg, as does freshman Chenise Miller with 10.0 ppg.
HOT START
Temple is 4-0 to start the season for the first time in four years, since the 2005-06 team started 6-0 before losing their seventh game at Florida.
NATIONAL POLL RECOGNITION
Although Temple is picked fifth in the A-10 Preseason poll, the Owls are third among conference teams in the current AP Poll with 6 votes. Xavier is ranked ninth, while Dayton is receiving 39 votes. In the ESPN/USA Today Poll (11/17), Xavier is 14th with Temple receiving 4 votes and Dayton receiving 3.
MAKES A GREAT DISH
LaKeisha Eaddy needs just two more assists to rank second all-time in career assists at Temple. She currently stands in third with 397 assists, one behind Dallese Jackson (1988-92) with 398. Eaddy is on pace to take over the top spot by the end of her career, currently held by Donna Kennedy (1979-83) with 507. Eaddy began with a bang in TU's season opener, dishing out a game-high 10 assists in the overtime win.
TAKING IT AWAY
Senior LaKeisha Eaddy ranked 21st in the nation with 2.8 steals per game last season, and is currently eighth on the all-time career steals list at Temple with 192. She needs only six to take over the seventh spot.
Eaddy recorded four steals in the first five minutes of Temple's win at Dartmouth, and went on to finish with a career-high eight steals in the contest.
FINALLY ACCEPTING CHARITY
Temple has struggled at the free throw line so far this season, currently ranking 13th of 14 teams in the A-10 at 53.6 percent, but the Owls came through when it mattered to earn the 65-55 win at Buffalo.
Going just 5-for-10 at the charity stripe prior to the final minute of the game, Temple went 8-for-8 in that minute to hold off the Bulls, which included a 6-for-6 effort by Shaqwedia Wallace.
HIDE YOUR VALUABLES
The Owls have a knack for coming up with the ball and forcing opponent turnovers, as evidenced by their 15.3 steals per game which is tops in the A-10 by almost three steals per game. Temple's 20 team steals at Dartmouth were the most in a single game for any A-10 team so far this season.
Temple has three players ranked in the top four in steals, with Kristen McCarthy averaging a league-best 3.3 spg, Shaqwedia Wallace tied for second at 3.0 spg and LaKeisha Eaddy tied for fourth at 2.8 spg.
TAKING DOWN THE SEC CHAMPS
Auburn was a big name in women's basketball last season, winning the powerhouse SEC and finishing the season ranked 13th in the nation. They defeated Temple a year ago, but the Owls answered with a 66-52 victory in Philly on Nov. 17. Temple controlled the game, out-rebounding and out-shooting the Tigers, and led by as many as 21 points early in the second half.
THE IVY LEAGUE CHAMPS, TOO
Temple took down another 2009 conference champ with its win at Dartmouth on Nov. 19, as the Big Green are two-time defending champs of the Ivy League. Every active player scored for the Owls in the win, led by senior Jasmine Stone's double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds.
HONORS FOR QWEDIA
The first Big 5 Player of the Week honor for the season went to Shaqwedia Wallace, for her outstanding play in the Owls' OT win vs. Illinois. Wallace also got OwlSports.com's Athlete of the Week. Kristen McCarthy was one of three Big 5 players named to the weekly Big 5 Honor Roll.
Wallace scored a career-high 27 points, including 4-for-9 three's. She also had five rebounds and tied a team-high four steals.
McCarthy tied a career-high 19 points and added three assists and four steals. She went 8-for-11 from the FT line, including a clutch 3-for-3 with 16 seconds remaining to force overtime with the score tied at 75.
NEVER SAY DIE
After trailing by as many as 18 points, and still trailing by 16 with under six minutes remaining, the Owls pulled off an impressive comeback in their season opener vs. Illinois, forcing overtime and then winning the game, 82-78.
NEXT UP...
Temple's next game will be a tough test, as the Owls travel to 3-1 Hartford on Saturday. The Hawks have a big win over Louisville, and are receiving votes in both polls.
