Senior captain is lone TU medalist in very competitive meet
University Park, PA – The Temple women's fencing team traveled to Happy Valley for the 2009 Penn State Open Saturday. The tournament was extremely strong, featuring most of the top teams in the country. In addition to defending NCAA Champion Penn State, in attendance were runner-up Notre Dame and other top 10 finishers such as Ohio State, Princeton, Northwestern, Yale and Harvard.
Leading the way for Temple was senior captain Kristin Howell, who took home the silver medal in epee. Kristin fenced a hard fought bout against the defending NCAA Champion, Anastasia Ferdman from Penn State, losing 14-15 in a real nail biter.
Also in epee, sophomore Jillian Bratton made the semi-finals, battling to a 12th place finish, while junior Grace Wu placed 26th. Rounding out the squad was sophomore Nicola Horscroft in 35th and junior Alyssa Lombardi in 47th.
In foil, freshman Mikayla Viradi reached the finals, finishing in seventh place. She was eliminated by defending NCAA Foil Champion Doris Willette from Penn State. Sophomore Alyssa Lomuscio edged her way into the top-25, placing 20th. Other notable finishes were had by sophomore Cara Taggersell (24th), senior Melissa Parker (32nd), and sophomore Danielle Jones (45th).
In sabre, sophomore Kamali Thompson placed best for the Owls just missing the semi-finals with an 18th place finish. Senior Christie Griffith competed to 25th place, while junior Audrey Barrosso placed 29th and classmate Samantha Pascarelli finished 33rd.
“This was an excellent finish for Kristin against some of the strongest epeeists in the country," said head coach Nikki Franke. "She fought very hard and did an excellent job. Although everyone would have liked to have done better, the season has just begun and we must continue to work hard and help each other improve. Our future is very bright with the depth of talent that we have on this year's team."
Up next for the Cherry and White is the NAC Tournament in Pittsburgh, PA, running from December 4-6.
