Temple Men's Crew Coach Gavin White Honored With 2009 Joy Of Sculling Lifetime Achievement Award

Owls mentor enters his 32nd year as head coach

Saratoga Springs, NY – Temple men's crew head coach Gavin White was honored as the recipient of the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award at the 17th Annual Joy of Sculling Conference, held in Saratoga Springs, NY on December 12.

Entering his 32nd season at the helm, White has led the Owls' Varsity 8 to victory in 19 Dad Vail Regattas, capturing 13 consecutive titles from 1989-2001. Under his guidance, the Cherry and White have earned international distinction with seven invitations to Great Britain's premiere regatta, the renowned Royal Henley Regatta (1983-86, 1989, 1990, 1994). In Temple's seven appearances, White has led the Owls to the Grand Finale once (1984) and into the quarterfinals four times (1985, 1990, 1993,1994).

A member of the Temple crew team from 1971-73, White was named the club's Most Valuable Rower, and was inducted in the Temple Athletics Hall of Fame in 1985.

Also honored at this year's conference were US Women's Olympic coach Tom Terharr, Boston University men's crew coach Tom Bohrer, and Stanford women's crew coach Yazmin Farooq.
