Women's Fencing Captures 13th Consecutive NIWFA Championship

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple Fencing team captured its 13th consecutive title at the 81st Annual National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championships on Saturday from Rutgers University.The Championships are the oldest continually-running national championship event in women's collegiate sport.
The Owls repeated as champions in spectacular style, sweeping all three squad titles and all three individual titles for the second consecutive year -- the only two times the feat has been accomplished by any school.
"This was a very strong performance by our entire team." said assistant coach Bradley Baker. "Everyone was fencing well and getting good results throughout the competition. Hopefully this will help propel us forward and set us up well for success at NCAA Regionals this weekend and NCAA Nationals a couple of weeks later."
Winners of individual titles for the Cherry and White include junior Melissa Parker in foil, junior Kristin Howell in epee, and freshman Kamali Thompson in sabre.
In other Temple Fencing news, nominations for NCAA Regionals were announced late last week. Twelve Owls were selected for the tournament:
Foil: Melissa Parker, Sabrina Shapiro and Cara Taggersell
Epee: Jillian Bratton, Kristin Howell, Alyssa Lombardi, Kaitlyn Uckert and Grace Wu.
Sabre: Audrey Barroso, Christie Griffith, Kristine Jones and Kamali Thompson.
The NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championships will be hosted by Drew University on Saturday, March 7th. Qualification to NCAA Nationals, hosted by Pennsylvania State University on March 19th-22nd, will be made based on the results from Regionals.
