Five Temple Fencers Selected for NCAA Championships

PHILADELPHIA - Five Temple fencers junior Kristin Howell, junior Melissa Parker, sophomore Grace Wu, sophomore Audrey Barroso and freshman Kamali Thompson - have been selected to compete in this years NCAA National Championships, the NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Committee announced on Tuesday.
We are extremely excited about our selections. It speaks volumes about the depth of our team and the hard work our athletes have put in all year said head coach Nikki Franke.
Selected for this years Championships are returning All-Americans Howell and Parker. Making their first appearances will be Wu, Barroso and Thompson.
Qualifying five out of a possible six fencers to the Championship is the best our team has done in quite some time added Franke. Making the field of 24 is extremely tough. Coach Baker and I are very proud of our entire teams effort this year and we are looking forward to the Championships.
A total of 24 men and 24 women are selected from across the country to compete in the foil, epee and sabre events. Each school is allowed a maximum of two fencers in each of the three weapons.
The 2009 NCAA Fencing Championships to be held at Pennsylvania State University from March 19-22.
