Men's Crew Repeats As Mayor's Cup Champions

TAMPA, FL - Following a week of training at Stetson University and on Lake Beresford, the Temple men's crew team traveled across Florida to compete in the prestigious Mayor's Cup Regatta on March 14, hosted by the Tampa Stewards Foundation. For the second consecutive year, the Owls took home top honors, winning the overall title.

The Owls were heavy favorites going into competition, and turned in winning boats in both the Varsity 8 and Varsity 8B divisions. The Owls won the Varsity 8 race by one full length, and the Varsity 8B by a length and a half. The Varsity 8 turned in the fastest time of the day, rowing a time of 4:09.

The conditions on the day were perfect for racing with sunny skies, temperatures in the mid-80's, and a slight cross-tail wind.

The Varsity 8 consisted of coxswain Thomas Goldner, James Barr (8-seat), Scott Waters (7-seat), Pat Curran (6-seat), Jason Cartwright (5-seat), Jeff Wunderlich (4-seat), Joseph Welsh (3-seat), Thomas Masterson (2-seat), John Masterson (1-seat). The Varsity 8B consisted of coxswain Michael Berger, Stephen Brady (8-seat), Joe Bellesheim (7-seat), Justin Allphin (6-seat), Brendan Cunningham (5-seat), Scott Herring (4-seat), Aaron Heyde (3-seat), Brian Reehill (2-seat), and Mike Van Assche (1-seat).

The Owls led from start to finish in both races. They were followed to the finish by Jacksonville, Marietta, Florida, and Emory.

The Men's JV 4+ finished second to Jacksonville, while the Frosh 4+ finished second to Marietta. Both the Varsity 8 and Varsity 8B were stroked by freshmen (James Barr and Stephen Brady), with the top two eights included a total of seven freshmen.

The JV 4+ consisted of coxswain Michael Berger, Scott Herring (4-seat), Mike VanAssche (3-seat), Brendan Cunningham (2-seat), and Bradford Long (1-seat). The Frosh 4+ was comprised of coxswain Samuel Scimeca, Stephen Brady (4-seat), Joe Bellesheim (3-seat), Brian Reehill (2-seat), and Aaron Heyde (1-seat).

Owls head coach Gavin White commented that this weekend's success was, "A real tribute to the recruiting of assistant coach Kevin Gross, and an overall great way to kick off the spring season."

The Owls take to the water next when they compete on the Schuylkill, hosting the Murphy Cup on March 28.
