AMBLER, PA - Penn broke open a one-run game with five runs in the seventh inning to beat Temple, 11-6, on Wednesday at Skip Wilson Field. Senior Carmen Del Mastro singled, tripled and drove in two runs, while classmate Jamie Abercrombie had two doubles to pace the Owls.
Leading 5-4, the Quakers took advantage of two TU errors to score five runs in the seventh, four of which were unearned. Adrian Lorenzo had a two-run single to highlight the inning for Penn.
The Owls had chances early on to take the lead after falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first. Senior Kyle Obal drove in Temple's first run with a sacrifice fly in the first. In the third, Del Mastro drove in Abercrombie with a single and later scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Cherry and White loaded the bases on a single by sophomore Rafael Cordero, a walk to freshman Taylor Juran and a single by senior Steve Mury with no outs. The tide turned, however, when the Owls could not plate a run after a fielder's choice to third and an inning ending double play. The twin killing marked the third time in the first four innings that the frame ended on a double play.
Obal drove in Del Matro, who led off the fifth with a triple, to cut the Penn lead to 5-4, but it would be as close as the Owls could get.
Junior Kyle Monahan suffered the loss after allowing five earned runs in four innings. He fell to 1-2.
Derek Vigoa led the Quakers (7-5) with four hits, while Tom Grandieri had two hits and knocked in three runs. Paul Cusick (3-0) earned the win after throwing two innings without allowing an earned run.
The Cherry and White (4-10) open Atlantic 10 play when it hosts Duquesne for a three-game series beginning on Friday. Live video streaming will be available for Saturday and Sunday.
