Temple Crew To Host 27th Annual Murphy Cup Saturday

PHILADELPHIA - Temple University men's and women's crews host the 27th Annual Murphy Cup Regatta this Saturday (March 28) on the Schuylkill River. The second largest intercollegiate regatta held on the Schuykill, the Murphy Cup features competitors from 43 colleges that hail from 35 cities and 12 states. Temple will look to defend its title in the men's Varsity 8 while Colgate, the winner of the 2008 women's Varsity 8, will look to repeat as well.
Named after John Murphy, a Temple rower who was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident in the Summer of 1980, the Murphy Cup Regatta was established in 1982.
As part of the day's activity, all former men's and women's Temple rowers are invited to a special Alumni Gathering beginning at Noon. The event will be held in a tent adjacent to the Canoe Club parking lot, along the Schuylkill River bank, and will offer rowing alumni the opportunity to share food and fellowship with other former letterwinners. The Murphy Cup's awards ceremony (5:15 p.m.) will be held inside the Alumni Tent, followed by a presentation from the University regarding the plans for a new Temple Boathouse on the Schuylkill. Rowing alumni are encouraged to make their RSVP by contacting the Temple Owl Club at (215) 204-2582.
The races will kick-off at 9:00 a.m. with the women's Novice 8 heat. Look for the Owls' women's Varsity 8 race to commence at approximately 1:26 p.m., with the men's Varsity 8 heat following shortly at about 1:50 p.m.
