PHILADELPHIA - Temple senior Carmen Del Mastro has been named the Atlantic 10 and Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player of the Week, the league office announced today. The second baseman batted .650 (13-for-20) with eight runs and four RBI to lead the Owls to a 4-1 week, including their second straight Atlantic 10 series sweep.
Del Mastro collected multiple hits in all five of TU's games last week. He also walked twice and was hit by two pitches to compile a .714 on base percentage and stole four bases.
He started the week with three hits against Monmouth and added two more versus Penn State. In a Friday doubleheader versus La Salle, Del Mastro went 6-for-9 with three runs scored and two RBI. He finished his week with two hits and three runs scored on Sunday against the Explorers.
The senior co-captain is batting .444, good for third in the A-10, and leads the conference with 40 hits and 12 steals.
He is the first Owl to earn A-10 Player of the Week honors since classmate Sean Barksdale won the award on May 21, 2007 and just the second in the past five years.
Temple (11-11) is off to its best start in conference play since 1984 after sweeping Duquesne and La Salle to start 6-0. The Owls visit Villanova on Tuesday at 3:15 PM in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic.
