Liberty Uses Long Ball To Sweep Owls In Saturday Twinbill

LYNCHBURG, VA - Liberty hit seven home runs and scored 29 runs in sweeping a doubleheader from Temple on Saturday at Worthington Stadium. The Flames won the opener, 18-9, and the nightcap, 11-1. Senior Carmen Del Mastro had five hits to pace the Owls offense.
In game one, Liberty (6-3) broke open a 4-2 game with a nine-run fifth inning, highlighted by a pinch hit grand slam by Doug Bream. The Flames eventually took a 16-2 lead before the Cherry and White rallied for seven runs in the eighth before falling 18-9.
Seniors Jamie Abercrombie and Mark Ortega each had two run doubles in the inning. Sophomore Ben Flanary and Byron McKoy added RBI singles in the frame as well.
Del Mastro had four singles in the opener, while Abercrombie and sophomore Rafael Cordero added two hits each.
Freshman Dan Moller suffered the loss to fall to 0-2. He allowed seven earned runs in four innings.
The nightcap was a contest until Liberty scored 10 runs in its final four at-bats to sweep the twinbill. Senior Kyle Obal had three hits, including an RBI single in the first, for Temple (2-5).
Junior Ryan Thomas was tagged the loss after allowing four earned runs in six innings.
The series concludes on Sunday at 1 PM.
