Men's Crew Takes Two Gold Medals At Knecht Cup

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's varsity crew program had quite an impressive day at the Knecht Cup Regatta on the Cooper River in Camden, NJ. The varsity eight won the Grand Final by 1 1/3 lengths over Saint Joseph's with Rutgers, Virginia, Hobart, and Bucknell finishing third through sixth, respectively. The owls' second varsity eight also took home the gold.
Fifth after 250 meters, the Cherry and White varsity eight comprised of James Barr (stroke), John Masterson (7-seat), Patrick Curran (6-seat), Jason Cartwright (5-seat), Brendan Cunningham (4-seat), Joseph Welsh (3-seat), Thomas Masterson (2-seat), Scott Waters (bow) and Michael Berger (coxswain), walked back through the field to win going away. Stroked by freshman Barr, the young Owls, striking 34 beats per minute, showed great poise through the middle 1000 meters, according to head coach Gavin White. This is the fourth consecutive year that Temple has won the men's varsity eight at the Knecht Cup hosted by Villanova university.
Temple's second varsity eight, comprised of Stephen Brady (stoke), Joe Belleshiem (7-seat), Matthew Meyer (6-seat), Aaron Heyde (5-seat), Jeff Wunderlich (4-seat), Mike VanAssche (3-seat), Scott Herring (2-seat), John Boehm (bow) and Thomas Goldner (coxswain), also got off to a slow start, but by the 250 meter marker had taken control. The Owl boat extended their lead to 1 1/2 boat lengths by the finish to defeat Saint Joseph's, Rutgers, Hobart, Bucknell, and Delaware.
The Temple varsity four, comprised of Djordie Vilimanovic (stroke), Brendan Joyce (3-seat), Brad Long (2-seat), Nick Contino (bow) and Samuel Gennace (coxswain), finished in seventh place by winning the petite final. The Owls' frosh/novice four, comprised of Chris Roberts (stroke), Alex Klein (3-seat), Brian Rehill (2-seat), Petar Ivacic (bow) and Sam Scimeca (coxswain), took fourth place behind Colgate, Marietta, and Philadelphia U.
The Owls next take the river at the SIRA Regatta in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on April 18.
