AMBLER, PA - Charlotte took advantage of nine walks and four errors to earn the series victory with a 14-5 victory over Temple on Sunday at Skip Wilson Field. Senior Kyle Obal had three hits, while classmate Sean Barksdale became the fifth Owl, and second this season, to reach the 200-hit plateau with his seventh inning single.
The Owls never seemed to get on track on the mound or in the field. Ten 49ers that reached base via a free pass or error eventually came around to score and six of their runs were unearned.
Barksdale now has exactly 200 hits on his career and is the only member of the top five to reach the milestone in three seasons. He trails teammate Jamie Abercrombie, who is currently fourth, by six hits. Abercrombie had two hits on the day as did senior Mark Ortega.
The contest was close early on before Charlotte broke it open with two in the fourth, three in the fifth and three more in the seventh. Temple plated three in the seventh to try to make it interesting but 49er reliever Kelly McLain shut the door by throwing 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Junior Ryan Thomas had a tough outing after earning the save yesterday. He suffered the loss to fall to 3-2 after allowing five earned runs in four innings and walking six.
Patrick Lawson (5-2) picked up the win for the visitors, allowing five earned runs in 6.1 innings. He was cruising through six before running into trouble in the seventh.
Sophomore Ryan Ferguson led off the frame with a double and later scored on Barksdale's single. Junior Tony Jusino followed with a double and Obal made it 11-5 with his RBI single.
But Charlotte (22-14, 7-8) added three in the ninth, two of which were unearned, to add some insurance and complete the series victory. Rob Lyerly had three hits and drove in three runs for the 49ers.
TU (14-20, 9-5) is currently in third place in the A-10, three games behind league-leading Rhode Island. Dayton is in second place at 11-4.
The Cherry and White continue its seven-game homestand when it hosts Villanova on Tuesday at 3 PM.
NOTES: Abercrombie moved into a tie for 8th place on the all-time doubles list with 39...He is also fourth all-time in starts and sixth in games played.
