PHILADELPHIA - Senior Sean Barksdale, who broke a 31-year old program record on Friday, has been named the Philadelphia Big Five Baseball Player of the Week, in voting by the city's head coaches and sports information offices. The co-captain batted .389 with two homers and nine RBI in four games last week. He is now the all-time leader in RBI at Temple with 162, breaking Pete Dempsey's mark of 154 set in 1978.
He did most of his damage on Friday and Saturday, hitting both his home runs and driving eight of his nine runs while batting .556 (5-for-9). The rightfielder had a two-run single in the seventh to cap a eight-run comeback that turned a 9-1 Saint Louis lead into a tie contest. The following day, his two-run homer in the seventh gave the Owls a 6-4 lead.
The Glenolden, PA native leads the Atlantic 10 in runs (53), homers (15) and total bases (134) and is second in hits (78). He is batting a team-best .377 and has driven in 56 runs.
He is batting .492 with runners in scoring position and .541 with runners in scoring position in A-10 games.
Barksdale is ranked third on the single season and career home run (27) lists at Temple. He is also fifth in hits (222) and seventh in steals (53).
Villanova's Brian Streilein won the Big 5 Pitcher of the Week.
The Owls visit Fordham for a three-game Atlantic 10 series beginning on Thursday.
