BRONX, NY - Senior Jamie Abercrombie broke the single-season doubles record and finished his career second on the all-time hit list as Temple dropped its final game of the season by a 7-5 score at Fordham's Houlihan Park on Saturday night. Abercrombie doubled in the first and eighth to give him 22 doubles this season and 230 hits for his career.
The senior entered the game tied for the single season doubles record (20) with Mike Palys (1989) and Stan Orzechowski (2007). He led off the game with a two-base hit to left to set the record and also finished his career with 47 doubles, good for second all-time with Mike Weckenman (2002-05). His 231 career hits were three short of Bob Filler's (1998-01) program record.
Sophomore Ryan Ferguson made the most of his second straight start in place of senior Sean Barksdale, who was injured in Thursday's game. Ferguson had a career-high three hits and scored a run. Sophomore Rafael Cordero also had a pair of hits.
The Owls (17-33, 11-15 A-10) fell behind 7-0 after three innings and could not recover. Three unearned runs in the fourth made it 7-3, with two runs coming on senior Kyle Obal's (Derwood, MD / Sherwood) double. Abercrombie's two-run double in the eighth cut the deficit to 7-5, but the Cherry and White went down in order in the ninth.
Freshman Tyler Horst suffered the loss after allowing six earned runs in two innings. He fell to 1-5. Juniors Matt Blackburn and Mike Click combined to throw six innings of relief and allowed just an earned run.
Greg Dimling (4-1) pitched four innings of relief without allowing an earned run for the victory for Fordham (22-30, 16-11).
