Owls Falter In 8-3 Loss At UMES

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Temple committed five errors and left 12 runners on base in an 8-3 loss on Wednesday afternoon at Maryland Eastern Shore. The Owls out-hit the Hawks, but the fielding miscues led to four unearned runs as the Cherry and White lost for the seventh time in their last eight outings. Senior Jamie Abercrombie and junior Tony Jusino had three hits each.
UMES got on the board with three in the first and added two more unearned runs, on two hit batters and an error, to take a 5-1 lead after three. A two-out TU error in the fifth led to two more unearned runs and the hosts added a run in the sixth to make the lead 8-1.
Temple got its first run in the opening frame on a RBI single by Jusino. The Owls left two runners on in the third and the bases loaded in the fifth, before scoring two runs in the eighth.
Jusino and senior Kyle Obal led off with doubles, and after a senior Mark Ortega single, senior Lenny DelGrippo drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 8-3.
Freshman Tyler Horst suffered the loss after allowing seven runs (three earned) in 4.2 innings. He falls to 1-4. Junior Mike Click allowed one earned run in 3.1 innings of solid relief.
Bryan Chaikowsky had doubled, tripled and drove in three for UMES (12-39). Russell Deutschmann (2-8) earned the win scattering 12 hits in 7.1 innings and allowing three earned runs.
The Owls (17-27) host Saint Louis in the final home weekend series of the season beginning on Friday at Skip Wilson Field. First pitch is set for 3 PM and OwlAccess will video stream all three games this weekend.
NOTES: Abercrombie now has 224 hits and needs 10 more to tie the school record set by Bob Filler in 2001...Senior Sean Barksdale cracked the single season hit list, moving into tenth with 72. He is the only player listed twice in the single season top ten for hits...Temple tied the school record for doubles with 117. The record was set in 2007.
