Three Men's Crew Boats Advance At Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA - Three of the four Temple men's crew boats that took the Schullykill River Friday in the 71st Dad Vail Regatta. The first day of racing was done via time 1500 meter time trials instead of normal heats due to river conditions. Saturday's race schedule has been altered drastically due to weather and conditions, see www.dadvail.org for new schedule.
The varsity eight, comprised of coxswain Michael Berger, stroke James Barr,Scott Waters (7-seat), Patrick Curran (6-seat), Jason Cartwright (5-seat), Brendan Cunningham (4-seat),Joseph Welsh (3-seat), Thomas Masterson (2-seat) and John Masterson (bow), placed 12th of 33 crews in a time of 4:07.713. The Owls, who were 4.7 seconds behind top-finisher Michigan, will row in the first race of the day at 7:00 a.m. and must finish first or second to advance to the noon final.
The junior varsity eight, comprised of coxswain Thomas Goldner, stroke Stephen Brady, Joe Bellesheim (6-seat), Matthew Meyer (6-seat), Aaron Heyde (5-seat), Jeff Wunderlich (4-seat), Brian Reehill (3-seat), Scott Herring (2-seat), Mike VanAssche (bow), advanced to the Saturday's final (1:10 p.m.) with a fourth place finish in a time of 4:32.527.Grand Valley State turned in the day's best time (4:29.789).
The freshman/novice four of coxswain Sam Scimeca, stroke Djordje Vilimanovic, Petar Ivacic (3-seat), Chris Roberts (2-seat), Brandon Joyce (bow) turned in the day's best time, finishing in 4:40.759. Ohio State, which defeated Temple in the SIRA Regatta, placed second. The Owls' semifinal starts at 10:20 a.m. and if TU finishes among the top two it will advance to the final (2:06 p.m.).
The varsity four of coxswain Samuel Gennace, stroke John Boehm, Alex Klein (3-seat), Brad Long (2-seat), Nick Contino (box) did not qualify for Saturday's semifinal.
